Why Sleep is More Important Than You Think…
We have all heard how important sleep is. You probably remember when your parents came up to your room, and said “Go to bed, so your ready for school tomorrow. You need your 8 hours of sleep”. But is it really true, that sleep is so important, and is 8 hours the magic number we need to hit every single night, to be refreshed the next day?
To answer that, we need to look at what sleep does.
Sleep is the body’s nightly repair mode
When we sleep, our body goes into some sort of recovery process. Our body begins repairing itself from damages we got along the day, and our immune system kicks into gear, and begins fighting off bacteria and illnesses we experienced that day. You can say it’s like regular maintenance for the body.
Your Brain Doesn’t Sleep When You Do
But the brain doesn’t shut down, even after you’re knocked out and fallen into dreamland. The brain is processing faster than it normally does and begins organizing memories, emotions, and even reinforces information you learned through the day.
That’s why sleep is important when you need to memorize a presentation or have to take an exam. Sure, you can practice for 22 hours a day, but it’s when you sleep that the knowledge solidifies in your brain, and you’re able to remember it.
So, What If We Didn’t Sleep?
The short answer is: if we didn’t have the ability to sleep, we would quickly get tired and become very, very sick.
Why 8 Hours of Sleep Matters
But what about the 8 hours? According to our natural circadian rhythm, we need to go through about 4–5 phases, each taking about 90 minutes, of both deep and REM sleep.
If we forget to set an alarm, our body will automatically wake us up after the last phase is complete. But if we get woken by an alarm and interrupted in a phase, we feel more tired and grumpy, since our body didn’t get to finish.
It’s like shutting off a video game before you have saved the file.
Don’t Stress About a Sleepless Night
But it’s not dangerous to sleep less than 8 hours. We all have insomnia nights where we get little to no sleep. That just means we’ll get more sleep the next night.
Sleep: The Body’s Best Medicine
Overall, sleep is like a drug. We need it to survive, but sleep is also a good thing — because if we didn’t sleep, we would never get a break. Our day can be divided into three sections:
8 hours sleep, 8 hours work, and 8 hours of fun. So Sleep on that.
